Description

The Guard House at the Redford infantry barracks on Colinton Road in Edinburgh is a single-storey and attic building with three bays, designed by Harry B Measures and constructed between 1909 and 1915. It features a veranda supported by cast iron columns on the main northeast elevation and has a two-bay flat-roofed wing to the southwest. The structure is made of dark, coursed rock-faced rubble with pale ashlar dressings, and the windows have projecting cills. The rear elevations are characterized by small, high, rectangular windows, while most ground floor windows are fitted with vertical metal bars.

The principal northeast elevation includes a central entrance door flanked by six windows. The attic is adorned with a pair of large gabled dormers, each featuring Diocletian windows. The glazing is predominantly 12-pane in timber sash and case windows.

The interior, which was observed in 2016, has undergone some modifications to accommodate modern guard facilities. It contains one large, brick-lined room with high-level windows and a corridor that retains remnants of former cells.

To the immediate northeast of the guard house are a pair of tall, rock-faced gatepiers that are cylindrical with ball caps and arcaded details beneath a cornice. These gatepiers are flanked by curved quadrant walls with flat coping, connecting to raised corniced piers topped with ball caps. The entrance is marked by two-leaf cast iron gates and pedestrian gates on either side.

Additionally, a row of cast iron railings, interspersed with wider pillars featuring hexagonal baluster heads, extends along the roadside northeast from the guard house to the later entrance of the barracks and southwest towards Inchdrewer House, which is also listed at category B.
