Description

9, 11, 13 Calton Hill is a tenement building from the later 18th century, situated on a steeply sloping corner site in Edinburgh. It features an external circular stair tower on the east side and has three storeys plus a basement and attic. The north elevation has four bays, while the east elevation has three bays. The building is mainly constructed of rubble, with the stair tower partially harled and some brick and harl on the east elevation, complemented by polished and stugged ashlar margins and long and short quoins. The windows are arranged in a regular pattern.

On the north elevation, there is a two-leaf timber-panelled and glazed door at the far right, with a brick relieving arch above the lintel. To the left, stone steps lead up to a timber panelled door set in a recessed opening on the ground floor, flanked by one window on the left and two on the right. The far left corner is chamfered, and there is a stop-chamfer between the ground and first floors. Dormer windows are present in the outer left and right bays.

The east elevation features the stair tower at the centre, with external steps leading to a doorway on the ground floor that faces north.

The glazing consists of plate glass in timber sash and case windows, and there are flat-roofed dormers with lead haffits. The building has a mansard roof covered with grey slate and a gablehead stack on the east elevation.

The interior was only partially viewed in 2002, focusing on the ground floor and the tower. The ground floor is now open plan, with a recessed cooking range remaining on the east wall. The tower contains a spiral stair that rises from the ground to the third floor level.
