Description

The Bonded Warehouse, located at 3-5 Mitchell Street in Leith, Edinburgh, was rebuilt by Peter L Henderson in 1897, incorporating an earlier three-storey warehouse. This imposing five-storey, eight-bay warehouse features a square plan and has a modern harled addition at the rear. The exterior is made of cream sandstone, squared and snecked rubble, with a stugged finish to the front and droved dressings. It includes a base course, a band course above the first floor, and stop-chamfered reveals for the ground floor openings on the front elevation.

On the southwest (front) elevation, there are pend openings to the outer right and the centre bay, with boarded timber doors and cast-iron palstones in the centre, along with setted pends. There are doorways to the left of each pend opening, with the left one being a later alteration, and single windows in the remaining bays, with single windows above.

The northwest elevation is eight bays wide with four symmetrical gables. The band course continues until the fourth bay, which shows remains of the earlier building. Each bay has single windows, some of which are blocked, and there is an iron escape stair attached to the outer left gable.

The southeast elevation mirrors the northwest with an apex stack on the outer right gable and a two-storey building abutting it. The windows are barred, fixed timber with four panes, and some have cast-iron lintels. The roof is slate with an apex stack.

Inside, the warehouse features steel beams and columns.
