Description

55 Constitution Street is a building located in Leith, Edinburgh, designed in 1799 for William Ainslie and constructed after 1804, with a later extension. It is a two-storey and basement house originally featuring four bays, along with a two-bay matching extension to the northeast. The exterior is made of cream sandstone, with a stugged ashlar basement and polished ashlar above, while the rear and side are constructed from coursed and squared rubble with stugged dressings. The building has a band base course, a band course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice with a blocking course, blind balustraded aprons beneath the first-floor windows, and architraved windows.

On the northwest (front) elevation, there are railed stone steps leading down to a Roman Doric doorpiece located to the right of the center. This doorpiece features stylised foliage capitals, a panelled door, and a rectangular plate glass fanlight, along with regular fenestration. The southwest (Mitchell Street) elevation consists of three bays and has a gabled roof with a broad apex stack, featuring single windows (with the outer windows blinded) and a single window at the gablehead. The southeast (rear) elevation includes single windows and a large canted brick bay to the right, along with three rectangular dormers, some of which have been re-glazed.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, some of which are 12-pane on the rear and side. The roof is covered in black slate and features two apex stacks and one transverse stack (formerly an apex stack). The building has moulded gutterheads.

Inside, there is a tripartite inner door with a semi-circular fanlight that has radial astragals and floral carving on the architrave.

The property is enclosed by low boundary walls at the front, with cast-iron railings and two tall coped gatepiers facing Mitchell Street. There are remains of a tall boundary wall with an inset doorway that has been blocked.
