Description

59 Constitution Street is an early 19th-century, two-storey and basement block of flats located in Leith, Edinburgh. The building features a five-bay façade with a central pend. The front is made of cream sandstone with a polished ashlar finish, while the sides are coursed and squared, and the rear is constructed from coursed rubble with stugged dressings. There is a base course and a band course above the ground floor, along with broad angle pilasters.

The northeast (front) elevation has a rectangular pend at the center, which includes a small window on the mezzanine floor above and a single blinded window at the first floor. The plain doorways are accessed by oversailing steps, with storage cellars beneath. These doorways have panelled doors and rectangular three-pane fanlights. To the right, there are two doorways and a single window in the outer bay, with two single windows above at the first floor. To the left, there is a doorway and two windows in the outer bay, with two single windows above at the first floor. The basement features single windows, and the building has a raised parapet with moulded coping.

The southeast (rear) elevation has a segmental-arched pend at the center, with small windows and a taller stair window above. The outer bays have later doorways and single windows, with plain iron window guards on the right bays.

The southwest elevation features a lugged gable with a rendered apex stack. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a black slate roof with lead flashings, and two coped and rendered apex stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1992 and is currently derelict. There is a low rubble wall at the front and some original cast-iron railings.
