Description
The bastion and retaining walls at Newliston House were built between 1722 and 1744 and feature a French style fortified terrace that is rectangular in shape with bastion angles. The structure is bisected obliquely by a canal to the south and was constructed 40 years before the current mansion house. The vistas are aligned with significant landmarks, including Craigiehall to the east and Niddry Castle to the northwest. The walls are made of squared stone with large block coping. Currently, some sections of the terrace are in poor condition due to tree roots and age, although part of it has been repaired. There are three weirs associated with the canal.
