Heriot Hill House, 1 Broughton Road, Edinburgh

Heriot Hill House is a classical villa located at 1 Broughton Road, Edinburgh, built in 1788 with significant later additions and alterations. The building is two stories tall and features a three-bay design with a piended roof. To the right, there is a single-storey piend-roofed pavilion addition that conceals the original structure from 1788, while the left side has been altered to include a flat-roofed angled two-bay projection. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with painted ashlar margins, a base course, a cill band at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course.

On the southeast elevation facing Broughton Road, there is a modern door with a fanlight set within a corniced and architraved doorpiece at the center. To the left and right at ground level are stone-mullioned tripartite windows, with regular window arrangements above. The right projection features one window, while the left projection has three windows.

The northeast side elevation includes a piend-roofed single-storey pavilion on the left and a later two-storey addition on the right. The southwest side elevation shows an altered pavilion at ground level on the left, with evidence of the former pitch of the pavilion above.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The building has timber sash and case windows with four-pane and plate glass glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slate and feature wallhead stacks on the southwest and northeast sides.

The property is enclosed by boundary walls made of ashlar and rubble, topped with coping, and includes square-plan sandstone ashlar gatepiers.
