Description

Deanbank House is a late 18th century, two-storey, three-bay Classical villa located at 12 Dean Bank Lane in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. It features a piend roof and has pavilion wings extending to the rear, creating a U-shape, with a single storey at the front and a single storey with attics at the rear. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone with droved and polished sandstone ashlar dressings, and it has rusticated quoins on the front elevation. The windows are regularly spaced and have raised ashlar margins.

The front elevation includes a half-glazed timber-panelled front door with a rectangular fanlight, set within a pilastered architrave featuring a cavetto splay. There are tripartite windows on the ground floor, and lean-to single-storey pavilions on the outer left and right, with a French door in the left pavilion. The main house has urn finials at the corners, while the pavilions are topped with ball finials.

On the rear elevation facing Dean Bank Lane, there is a gothick-arched staircase window in the center, and a kitchen extension added in 1968 by Michael Laird. The gabled pavilions on the left and right are advanced, connected by a linking screen wall. The right pavilion features an oculus window in the attic, and the left pavilion has been heightened, likely in the 19th century.

Inside, the house retains a good 18th century interior that is largely intact. The entrance hall has late 19th century encaustic tiles and a stone staircase. There are several 18th century chimneypieces, including a fine white marble chimneypiece with neoclassical reliefs in the drawing room and an attic bedroom chimneypiece with delft-tile insets and hearth. The interior features simple Georgian cornicing and timber panelled doors throughout.

The windows have 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, and there are corniced ashlar wallhead stacks with yellow clay cans. The roof is covered with graded grey Scottish slate.

Surrounding the property is a high boundary wall made of ashlar-coped sandstone rubble.
