5-7 Frederick Street, Edinburgh

5-7 Frederick Street in Edinburgh is a former club building, now converted into flats, designed by Dunn and Findlay in 1903. This broad, four-storey structure with an attic features three bays and showcases Free Renaissance detailing. It projects from the street line and includes shops at the ground level. The exterior is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar.

At the ground floor, there are two modern shopfronts flanking an off-centre doorway, which has a two-leaf panelled door and a plate glass fanlight, with the original cornice still in place. The outer bays have shallow oriel windows, while the centre bay features paired windows. The first floor is adorned with moulded architraves and a cornice above it, leading to an overhanging modillioned cornice at the eaves. The centre of the attic has a full storey, marked by an open segmental pediment that contains a cartouche and a pair of bipartite windows, flanked by pilastered timber box dormers set behind curved solid parapets.

The side elevations are ashlar faced at the front and have shaped gables, with advanced rubble stacks at the centre. The irregular rear elevation is faced with glazed bricks and includes a glazed projection to the right at ground level.

The building features timber sash and case windows, with 15-pane windows at the first floor, 12-pane windows on the upper floors, and plate glass in the attic. The roof is finished with grey slates, and there are ashlar coped skews and stone stacks. Cast-iron downpipes with moulded rainwater heads complete the exterior.

The interior has been divided into flats, but it has not been seen since 1995.
