Gowanlea, 547 Lanark Road, Edinburgh

Gowanlea, located at 547 Lanark Road in Edinburgh, is a former dower house from the mid 18th century that was later used as a manse and underwent significant remodeling in the early 19th century. The original house is rectangular in shape, featuring a south front that was altered in the early 19th century to include twin single-windowed canted oriels supported by massive corbelling. The house also has good original dormers with blind splayed sides above, all constructed from rubble with droved dressings and retaining original glazing. The property includes a two-storey and attic rear wing with a quadrant feature at the angle, designed in the style of Sir Rowand Anderson. Inside, there is some mid 18th century woodwork, while the rest dates from the early 19th century and the Victorian period. Additionally, there is a small cottage-like outbuilding with two windows and a central door, which is now used as a garage.
