31 Salisbury Road, Edinburgh

31 Salisbury Road in Edinburgh is a monumental, symmetrical, five-storey block designed by J Douglas Miller between 1938 and 1947. The building features polished ashlar cladding on the front and side elevations, a ferro-concrete frame, and an E-plan rear with harled elevations. The southeast and southwest angles are dramatically raked.

The south entrance elevation has five bays, each containing paired single windows. The central bay is recessed and includes a ground floor canopy with a balconied eaves gallery that connects the advanced projecting bays. The entrance is located in the center at ground level, which is slightly advanced compared to the more deeply recessed upper floors. The central bay from the first floor has a slightly advanced and tapered breaking wallhead in a block-parapet.

The north elevation features strip-glazing, with vertically-glazed stair bays at the east and west arms, and horizontal glazing on the return rear elevations. The east and west elevations have pairs of single windows on all floors. The single windows include lower casements and two-pane top hoppers, with taller ground floor windows that have transoms, and strip-glazing at the rear.

Inside, the building has plain 1930s fittings, parquet flooring, and a recreation hall with a grid-glazed flat roof.
