Description

30-32 Frederick Street in Edinburgh is a building constructed between 1786 and 1792, later extended in 1900 by either Victor D Horsburgh or Francis W Deas. This structure features three bays and rises four storeys with an attic, originally built from droved cream ashlar sandstone and later extended with polished ashlar. The ground floor has been modernised in 1994, featuring a corniced timber glass display window with a geometric bow at the centre and blind balustrading below the cornice. To the left at ground level, there is a pilastered arched doorpiece with a diamond-pane fanlight, providing access to the upper floors.

The third storey has a cill course at the former eaves level, and there is a bracketed cornice on the outer bays, which have shaped parapets and segmental-headed dormers in the mansard roof. The central attic bay is made of ashlar and features paired windows with ogee apron panels and a Dutch gable supported by pilasters.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with four panes on the upper floors and twelve panes in the attic. The skews are ashlar coped, with stacks reduced or removed to the south and made of stone to the north, topped with grey slates.

Inside No 30, there is a pilastered inner door with a three-pane fanlight. A straight flight of stairs leads to the first floor, which connects to a curving cantilevered former common stair that provides access to the original flat on each floor.
