Description

74 George Street in Edinburgh is a former classical tenement building dating from around 1775, with later alterations. It is a three-storey structure with a basement and attic, featuring ten bays arranged in a 4-1-5 pattern, and is situated on a corner site with a shop built out at the ground level. The exterior is constructed of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, and it has long and short quoins at the corner.

On the George Street elevation, there is a common stair door at the center, with five bays to the right that include cornices and architraves at the ground level. The central section has a tripartite doorpiece featuring a fluted frieze and a mutule cornice, topped by an early 20th-century mansard roof that includes three large corniced bipartite dormers. The four bays to the left have a modern shop at the ground level, and there is a plain eaves cornice.

The Frederick Street elevation consists of five bays, with a gable over the four right bays and a modern shop at the ground level.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes. The building has rendered brick stacks, a rebuilt stone mutual stack to the west, ashlar coped skews, and is covered with grey slates.

The interior was not seen in 1995. The property features cast-iron barley twist railings.
