Description

The buildings at 7-12 Tron Square, constructed around 1900 by the City Engineers Department, consist of three four-storey blocks set on sloping ground. Originally, these blocks housed 105 separate workmen's dwellings. They are made of cement-rendered brick with cement dressings around the openings, featuring projecting cills and discontinuous base and string courses. The design includes vernacular detailing such as crow-stepped gables, dormers, piended roofs, and projecting eaves.

In the lower square, there are two L-plan blocks that form a U-plan, with a flight of stairs leading up to the upper square situated between them. The outer corners of these blocks feature projecting four-storey towers with canted windows, alongside flanking staircases. Common stairs are located in the re-entrant corners, leading to concrete decks supported by iron columns and railings.

The upper square contains a four-storey rectangular block. This block has projecting outer bays topped with piended roofs and distinctive ogee-shaped gable dormers that break the wallheads. A common staircase is positioned slightly left of centre, leading to concrete decks that provide access to each floor. The arrangement of doors and windows on either side of the staircase is irregular.

The windows are timber sash and case, predominantly featuring four and six-pane upper sashes with plate glass lower sashes. The buildings have harled and coped ridge stacks with mainly red clay cans and are roofed with grey slate.
