Description

The greenhouse at Aidenkyle House on Aidenkyle Road in Kilcreggan dates from the mid-19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay, asymmetrical house designed in a rectangular plan with gabled Tudor details. The main elevation features painted harl with rusticated margins and dressings, while the other elevations are lime-washed over whinstone rubble.

On the southeast (main) elevation, there is a broad gable that is advanced at the center, with a gabled porch that has a scalloped bargeboard located off-center to the left at ground level. This porch includes a step and platt leading to a two-leaf panelled door framed by a plinth wall, square die, and urns. To the right of the door is a window, and above it, there is a window at the first floor level, along with a blank plaque in the gablehead. The outer left features a bipartite window, while the right side has a recessed bay with a balustraded area.

The southwest (garden) elevation showcases a gable with a full-height canted window set on a deep whinstone battered base, and a lunette window directly above it in the gablehead.

On the northwest elevation, there is a gable to the outer left and a canted bay at ground level on a deep base, which includes a blocking course and a decorative cast-iron balustrade. Above, there is a slender tripartite window at the upper floor. To the right, a two-bay block is recessed, featuring a door and two windows at ground level, with a bipartite window to the outer right and a small window in the outer left corner.

The main elevation has 12-lying-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the remaining elevations feature plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, equipped with rooflights and lead flashings, and has broad harled and coped wallhead stacks on sandstone bases.

The interior was not seen in 1993.

A decorative cast-iron balustrade runs along a high wall to the northeast of the house, marking higher ground on this side of the site and featuring Greek details, including Anthemion and floral motifs.

Additionally, there is a piend-roofed glasshouse with terracotta ridging located to the northeast of the site. The boundary wall consists of a tall rubble wall with semicircular rubble coping, complemented by a rusticated ashlar gatepier topped with a triangulated cap.
