Memorial Cross, Dunlossit House, Port Askaig, Islay

The memorial cross at Dunlossit House in Port Askaig, Islay, was likely designed by Sir John James Burnet around 1900. This carved stone Celtic cross, which includes the shaft, is dedicated to the Gilmour family and is located at the western end of the track west of Port Askaig and northwest of Dunlossit House. The rectangular stone shaft features roll moulded edges and a frame around the panels, with the lower limb of the cross remaining, which is a cross patee, along with the stump of an encircling ring. The shaft displays a panel of intricate swirling Celtic carvings below a smaller panel that depicts a seated winged female holding a baby in her lap, flanked by two large winged cherubs. Additionally, there is an entwined snake carving on the remnant of the cross limb and a guilloche pattern on the encircling band.
