Description

7-9 Argyle Street is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building dated 1882, which is part of a terrace that includes shops on the ground floor. It is constructed from yellow sandstone ashlar with raised ashlar margins. The ground floor features a cornice, and there are architraved string courses along the building. Above, a raised lintel course is located beneath the corniced eaves. The first and second floors have architraved and corniced windows, with flanking consoles and projecting corbelled cills on the second and third floors. The outer left and right bays contain bipartite windows with stone pilaster mullions, and there is a decorative armorial panel centered on the second floor.

On the northeast elevation, the entrance features a two-leaf timber panelled door positioned off-center to the right, with replacement doors to the left and shopfronts in between. The first, second, and third floors have bipartite windows in the outer bays, while the two central bays contain single windows on all floors.

The building predominantly has two-pane timber sash and case windows, although there is replacement glazing on the second floor, which is offset to the left of center, and on the third floor, which is offset to the right. The roof is covered with grey slate and features corniced apex stacks on the northwest and southeast sides, along with circular cans. There is also a corniced wallhead stack at the front, embossed with "1882," although its cans are missing.
