Description

1 York Terrace in Rothesay, Bute, is a former manse built in the mid-19th century. This symmetrical building has two storeys and three bays, with a prominent advanced pedimented center. A later two-storey harled addition is set back to the outer right, which serves as the entrance for the first-floor flat. The structure features harl-pointed sandstone rubble with painted margins and strip quoins. It has a raised, painted base course and overhanging sandstone eaves that are corniced at the center. The quoins are droved, and there are droved long and short surrounds to the chamfered openings. Sandstone brackets support cast-iron balconies on the first floor, and there is a gabled porch at the ground floor entrance, with random rubble sandstone on the sides and rear.

On the northeast elevation, steps lead to a replacement two-leaf part-glazed timber door at the center of the ground floor (No 1), topped by a five-light fanlight. The advanced porch features a raised plinth, flanking columns, a decorative timber balustrade, and half-timbered gables. There is a single window centered on the first floor, with regular fenestration in the bays to the outer left and right. The recessed addition to the right has a harled stair and a single window at the ground level, with a modern door at the first floor (entrance No 1 1/2).

The ground floor has replacement glazing, while the first floor features 8-pane lying-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are polished yellow sandstone wallhead stacks, although the cans are missing. The interior was not seen in 1996.
