Description

Willowbank, located at 217 Clyde Street East in Helensburgh, is a villa built in 1832. This two-storey, three-bay building features gothic details and is rendered to resemble ashlar stone, painted for aesthetic appeal. The design includes chamfered arrises, ashlar mullioned windows with raised margins, and quoin strips.

On the south elevation, the entrance is marked by a slightly advanced narrow gabled bay at the center, which has a heavy bargeboard with a central pendant and a decorative finial. The entrance features a fanlit, pilastered doorpiece with a blind arcaded frieze above, leading to two-leaf panelled doors and a glazed vestibule door. There is a window at the first floor, along with a recessed blind panel at the gablehead. To the right, a broad full-height canted window breaks the eaves, with lights arranged in a 1-3-1 pattern. A similarly detailed window is found to the left at ground level, while three closely spaced windows are present at the first floor.

The east side elevation includes two windows at both the ground and first floors, with the left window blinded. The west side elevation features bipartite windows at the ground and first floors on the right, with the first-floor window blinded. A French window is located to the left, with a window above at the first floor. The north rear elevation has a two-storey wing, with painted rubble at the ground level and harled finish at the first floor. The window surrounds differ at the first floor, indicating that this upper storey was added later.

The villa has a mix of plate glass sash and case, casement, and uPVC replacement windows on the south elevation, while 12-pane and plate glass sash and case windows are used elsewhere. The roof is modern and tiled, featuring fine tall polygonal corniced stacks at the center with polygonal cans and overhanging eaves.

Surrounding the property are semi-circular coped rubble boundary walls.
