Description

The gatehouse and garage at Castle Toward were designed by David Hamilton between 1820 and 1821, with later additions and alterations made around 1921 by Francis W Deas. This impressive two-storey gatehouse features an accommodation range to the east and is built in a castellated Gothic-Revival style, using pale sandstone ashlar with a stugged finish. The structure includes turreted corner angles at the entrance tower and battlemented parapets, along with canted corner angles and hood mouldings that have distinctive carved figurative corbels.

On the south elevation, there are double-leaf timber gates leading to a four-centre entrance archway, which has a moulded surround in a square-plan octagonal-turreted entrance tower. To the west, there is a slightly lower battlemented wing that features a tri-partite window at ground level. The long seven-bay range to the east ends in a square-plan pavilion block and continues with another seven-bay range that has pedimented dormers breaking the eaves, as well as a square bartizan at the northeast corner. A garden wall extends from the east elevation, which includes a timber door and a small tower at the far east.

The garage range is a single-storey rectangular structure made of red sandstone, featuring a battlemented parapet and corner towers with buttressed angles. It has canted stone cills and large metal-framed multi-pane windows, topped with a pitched roof covered in grey slate. A pitched, half-timbered canopy connects the gatehouse and garage range over the courtyard.
