Description
This is an early 19th-century rubble pier, likely dating from around 1820-1821, a period coinciding with the construction of nearby Toward Castle by David Hamilton for Kirkman Finlay. The pier's east face is largely built from rubble and sits partly on exposed rock. The wall rises to form a breakwater and features an ashlar-coped top. Steps lead down to the water at the pier's far end, alongside concrete repairs, which may have been undertaken by the Glasgow Corporation and local residents in 1950. A shoreline quay is located at the pier's west end. A steel extension was added during the First World War, but it has since been removed. Information regarding the pier was provided by A Robertson of Toward.
