Description

43-45 High Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay classical tenement building that features a shop on the ground floor. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and includes a band course between the first and second floors, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course with architraved margins.

The west elevation, which is No 43, has a modern shopfront at ground level, with an entrance to a pend on the right. The first and second floors are symmetrical and regularly fenestrated, featuring corniced heads at the first floor. Above, there are two canted piended dormers.

The north elevation adjoins 39/41 High Street to the west, while the south elevation adjoins 47/49 High Street to the west. No 45 is attached to No 43 and extends eastward; it is made of stugged ashlar and has two bays, with a consoled doorpiece to the left, a rectangular fanlight, and an additional window to the left. The window to the right at ground level has been converted into a doorway. There is a four-storey rubble stone wing that adjoins, featuring a five-bay rendered ground floor and irregular fenestration on the first to third floors.

The east elevation has a two-bay gable end to the right and a modern single-storey flat roof addition at ground level, with a single bay above the pend to the left (No 45) and a dormer above.

The building has a variety of timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing. The roof is made of grey slate, and there are brick gablehead stacks to the north and south of No 45.

The interior has been modernised at ground level for the shop, while the upper floors and No 43 were not seen in 1997.
