Description
9-21 John Street in Montrose is a terrace of three houses with shops on the ground floor, built around 1820. The buildings are two storeys high and feature painted lined render.
On the south elevation, the house on the left has a later 19th-century shopfront with a symmetrical design, architraved margins, a central doorway, and flanking windows, including large outer windows with plate glass and an awning. The first floor has two widely spaced windows. The central house also has a later 19th-century shopfront with chamfered margins, a central doorway, a window to the right, and large outer windows with plate glass and a canopy. The first floor features two windows and canted dormers above the outer bays. The house on the right has a later 19th-century shopfront, additional first-floor windows, three narrow windows in the centre, and large flanking windows with chamfered margins and plate glass. The first floor has five windows and a canted, piended dormer to the right.
The west elevation adjoins 3-7 John Street, while the east elevation adjoins 23-27 John Street.
The buildings have timber sash and case windows on the first floor and in the dormers. They are topped with a grey slate roof and feature a stone skew and capped stack on the right of the central house.
The interior includes shops on the ground floor, but the first floor was not seen in 1997.
