Description
202-204 High Street in Montrose is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement building, with the bays grouped in pairs. It is part of an irregular terrace and has two adjoining buildings that form a shallow L-plan. The front is finished in sandstone ashlar, while the rear is partly harled. Notable features include cill courses on the first and second floors, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course with architraved margins.
The principal elevation features a painted shopfront at the center of the ground floor, with shallow pilasters and panels, and modern multi-pane glazing. To the right, there is a doorway leading to the upper storeys, which has a rectangular two-pane fanlight above it. A pend entrance is located to the left. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, with raised margins on the first floor, and two canted dormers above.
The north elevation is adjacent to 196-198 High Street on the left and has a two-bay wing to the right that connects to 200 High Street, displaying irregular fenestration. The south elevation adjoins 208-212 High Street on the right and has a two-bay wing to the left in Parks Close, with blocked windows at the ground level, a central doorway with a rectangular fanlight, and regular fenestration above.
The west elevation features a single bay to the right with a pend entrance at the ground level, a window on the first and second floors, and a dormer above. To the left, it adjoins 206 High Street at the ground and first floors, with a slate-hung gable end of the west wing above.
The building has timber sash and case windows, with eight panes on the front and twelve panes on the rear. The roofs are pitched with grey slate, and there are stone skews and skewputts. A brick and ashlar gable head stack is located on the north side. The interior was not seen in 1997.
