Description
The churchyard surrounds Fettercairn Parish Church, originally laid out as a plain rectangular space in 1804. Four Gothic windows were added to the south-east flank during the original construction. In 1838, a north-west transeptal aisle, a slender tower, and a spire were added to the centre of the south-west gable, designed by John Henderson of Edinburgh. Pinnacles were removed from the spire following storm damage in 1879. The church is constructed of red rubble with white sandstone dressings. The simple belfry lancets are topped with gabled details, and the spire is a plain octagon. Further work was carried out by G. P. K. Young of Perth between 1924 and 1925, including the addition of a broad sanctuary to the north-east gable. This includes a chamfered chancel arch, flanking side arches featuring Y-tracery, a hammer-beam roof, and general refurnishing. The churchyard itself is approximately oval in shape and contains burial enclosures for the estates of Fasque, Balmain, and Arnhall, with a range of good 17th and 18th century memorials. The east section of the churchyard wall was rebuilt in 1900 by Walker and Duncan. The building remains in ecclesiastical use. Historic records indicate that earlier repairs and a scheme for remodelling the church with an open roof, prepared by John Milne, were not implemented.
