Description
Fettercairn Parish Church is an ecclesiastical building originally constructed in 1804 as a plain rectangular structure. Four Gothic windows were added to the south-east flank. In 1838, a north-west transeptal aisle, a slim tower, and a spire were added to the centre of the south-west gable, a design by John Henderson of Edinburgh. Pinnacles on the spire were removed in 1879 following storm damage. The church is built of red rubble with white sandstone dressings. The simple belfry windows have lancet arches and gables above, and the spire is plain and octagonal.
Further work was carried out between 1924 and 1925 by G P K Young of Perth, who recast elements of the building and added a broad sanctuary to the north-east gable. This included a chamfered chancel arch, flanking side arches, Y-tracery, a hammer-beam roof, and general refurnishing.
The church is set within an approximately oval churchyard, which contains burial enclosures for the families of Fasque, Balmain, and Arnhall. The churchyard contains good examples of 17th and 18th century memorials. The east section of the churchyard wall was rebuilt in 1900 by Walker and Duncan.
Before Henderson's alterations, John Milne had undertaken repairs and prepared a scheme for remodelling the church with an open roof, though this was not implemented.
