Description
South Lodge, also known as Eden House, is a gabled, single-storey and attic gate lodge in an L-shape, built in 1850. The building was designed by Alexander Reid of A & W Reid, Elgin. It is constructed with harled walls and tooled granite ashlar dressings, with chamfered margins. A gabled porch is situated in the southwest re-entrant angle. There is a shallow, projecting rectangular window in the west elevation, facing the drive, with an ashlar canopy above the south gable window. The windows are timber sash and case, with original lying-pane glazing. A later piended dormer features multi-pane glazing. The roof is slate, with three coped axial stacks on a margined rectangular base, granite apex finials, coped skews, and bracketted skewputts. A single-storey, contemporary or near-contemporary gabled wing extends from the rear, also with a slate roof. An advertisement for tenders appeared in the Aberdeen Journal on 20 November 1850.
