Description
The Coach House, now comprising two dwellings, was originally built as stables and a carriage house in 1850. Designed by Alexander Reid of A & W Reid, Elgin, it was subsequently adapted into residential use between 1975 and 1978. The building is a long, single-storey range with an attic, laid out in an E-shaped plan.
The front elevation faces east and features a central gabled bay with shallow projecting wings either side. The exterior is white harled with granite ashlar margins. The central bay contains two segmental-headed carriage houses, the entrances of which are now glazed but retain the original double-leaf plank doors, which function as external shutters. A large, multi-paned glazed window is located to the left.
The outer wings project further and have regularly spaced windows. A doorway is set into the re-entrant angle of the southern dwelling. The north return wing appears as a three-bay cottage with a gable above the centre door. The front elevation features two dormers with decorative bargeboards and wooden finials. Most windows have either four or eight panes of glass, except for the large glazed openings. Granite finials top the gables. Internal axial chimneys are expressed externally, and the roofs are covered in slate. The gable coped skews have bracketed skewputts.
An advertisement for tenders appeared in the Aberdeen Journal on 30 April 1850 relating to the original construction.
