Description
Bell Cottage, likely designed around 1850 by Alexander Reid of A & W Reid, Elgin, was originally a single-story, two-bay east-facing school building. It is constructed of harled rubble with dressed granite ashlar details, featuring wide chamfers to the margins. A smaller, single-bay, north-facing gable wing houses the entrance and accommodates a later internal staircase; a separate rear entrance has also been added. The front has two windows, and two dormers with gablets topped with small ball finials. A stone forestair is positioned at the southeast corner, originally leading to a first-floor entrance now converted into a window. Windows have 9- and 12-pane glazing, likely installed around 1990. The stair hall extension contains a re-used decorative glazed fanlight, dating from around 1830, which is similar to that above the main doorway of Eden House (built in 1828). A granite bellcote sits atop the south gable, complete with a weathervane and bell, while the north gable is finished with a ball finial and crowsteps. A central ridge chimney stack features a deeply moulded cope and a stone ridge, and the roof is slate.
