Description
The Walled Garden at Eden House dates back to around 1830. It is roughly rectangular, with walls constructed of rubble and brick linings. The walls are topped with a cope of red Turiff sandstone ashlar. A pedestrian entrance in the north-east wall is framed by a grey granite doorpiece, likely dating to around 1850, and features a studded and ribbed plank door. A wide, segmental-headed entrance is located at the rear, connecting to the former stables.
A range of contemporary glasshouses with cast-iron frames are set against the south-west-facing wall within the garden, divided into three sections and built upon a red ashlar plinth. The front of the glasshouses is supported by slender cast-iron pilasters, which are taller in the central section and support a decorative scroll-shaped cornice at the wallhead. These glasshouses represent a rare survival due to their unusually wide span.
A portion of a 17th-century lintel or overmantel has been re-set into the exterior face of the north-west wall. This lintel is inscribed with the words "MY HOVP IS IN THE LORD."
