Description
Souter's Shop is a purpose-built soutar's shop and workshop, constructed around 1897. It is a single-storey, two-bay, rectangular building located to the southwest of Muir Croft cottage.
The building features vertically boarded timber panels with timber dressings, a granite rubble base course, and simple timber bargeboards. The gabled roof is covered with corrugated iron and has a small brick chimney stack on the northeast gable.
The entrance is on the northwest elevation, featuring a boarded timber door with a two-pane fanlight above, accessed by granite steps. To the left of the entrance is a single window. The southeast elevation has two windows, all of which are timber and predominantly 12-pane sash and case. The southwest gable, facing the road, has a large fixed nine-pane window with decorative margin-paned etched glass.
Inside, the building is lined with boarded timber and consists of two rooms: a shop and a workshop. The shop, located in the front section, has timber shelving on timber brackets along all the walls. The workshop at the rear is separated by a timber partition and includes timber shelving and a small iron stove set in a simple fire surround. The shop counter and the fixed soutar's equipment and machinery are still present.
