Description
This is a mid-18th century former Mission Hall, likely built as a pavilion or ancillary building to a larger, uncompleted mansion house. It is a single-story building with a piend-roofed single chamber. The exterior is of roughly squared rubble, originally probably harled, with ashlar dressings.
The northeast elevation features a slated, tripartite bow window at the centre. The northwest elevation has two tall windows arranged in two bays. The southeast elevation is of random rubble, with a low doorway on the right and remnants of a linking corridor; blocked openings are visible to the left. A steading abuts the rear of the building.
Large sash and case windows with a 24-pane glazing pattern are present throughout. The roof is covered in grey slates, steeply piended. A tall wallhead features a rubble coped stack at the rear, also with slate coping.
Inside, the building has a moulded cornice and a coved plaster ceiling. A fireplace is now missing, as noted by Dr J.M. Bulloch.
The room was originally intended as a pavilion for a new mansion house at Rosieburn, which was not fully realised. Rosieburn House, situated to the northeast of the hall, was begun around 1734 by the Gordon family, though only the ruinous walled garden survives today. The estate was sold in 1804, with details reported in the Aberdeen Journal on 28 November 1804. By 1937, the hall was being used as a meeting hall for the Established Church.
