Description

The mausoleum, built around 1860, is likely the work of architects A and W Reid of Elgin. It is a single-story, rectangular structure, oriented east to west, and set on a raised terrace above the River Deveron. A small, square tower adjoins the southeast corner. Constructed from squared and snecked rubble with polished ashlar dressings, the mausoleum features a base course, an eaves course, stepped and coped buttresses, and hoodmoulds over the main openings.

The east elevation has steps leading to a pointed-arch doorway with a boarded door and a moulded surround incorporating nook-shafts. A trefoil window is set into the gablehead. To the left of the doorway is a three-stage octagonal ashlar tower. The first stage has gabled Gothic panels, above which is a set-off second stage and a blind arcaded third stage featuring colonettes and a cornice. The tower is topped with a polygonal ashlar roof, a finial, and a weathervane.

The west elevation features a three-light Gothic window. Above it, set into the gablehead, is a louvred diamond-shaped opening. The north and south elevations each have five blind bays divided by buttresses, with the tower positioned on the south side.

The steeply pitched roof is covered with ashlar slabs, featuring ashlar coped skews with gablet skewputts and cross finials to the gables. A ventilator is situated at the centre of the ridge.

A memorial, located to the east below the terrace, is dedicated to Fredrick de le Mare Murison (1842-1911). This cruciform memorial is made of ashlar and is raised on two steps.

Low ashlar coped walls with cast-iron railings enclose the terrace to the east.
