Description
Mains Of Hallhead is a large, two-storey and attic farmhouse, originally dating to 1668. A later inscription on the door jambs reads 1668, although a more widely accepted date for the main structure is 1688, as indicated by contemporary records. In the 19th century, it was converted from a larger estate layout into a farmhouse. The exterior is thinly harled, with a moulded doorway set into the south re-entrant angle and a corbelled stair turret on the north side. Later 19th-century attic dormers were added. Much of the internal woodwork is now modern.
The main house represents a substantial portion of the original layout, although associated buildings to the north and south have disappeared. A coach house arch, originally a key feature, has been rebuilt and relocated significantly further from the main house, likely in the 1890s. The property was deserted in 1966.
