Description

This is a churchyard gateway dating to approximately 1620, though the finial above was added in 1705. The gateway features a moulded, semi-circular arch with recesses within, flanked by curved wing walls that extend to the churchyard wall. A top cornice originally supported a gabled or pedimented structure, which held a sundial and a 1705 finial. According to historical records and the work of Alexander Stevenson, the master mason, the date of 1705 refers to the finial’s addition.
