Description
The Bruce Arms Hotel, located at 39 Main Street and Inn Brae in Longside, is a circa 1840-50 building. It is a two-storey and attic structure with three windows and two canted dormers. Original glazing remains, and a later porch has been added. The exterior is finished in blue stucco. Single-storey outbuildings are also present.
The hotel forms part of a group of buildings creating a central square in the village. The village of Longside was founded in 1801 and laid out by a Mr. Whyte for Ferguson of Pitfour. At the time of its founding, the only buildings in the area were the Sandhole alehouse and Kirkton farmhouse. The village grew rapidly until the wool factory at Millbank ceased operation in 1828.
