Description
Balchers is a late 18th century house that is symmetrical and long, featuring two storeys, three bays, and a dormerless attic. A single storey wing projects from the north gable and is dated 1802, while a further wing at the southwest is dated 1881. The building is constructed of rubble, mainly harled or harl-pointed, with contrasting painted tooled ashlar margins and a base course.
The main house has a regular frontage with a central door that includes a letterbox fanlight, and slightly smaller windows on the first floor. The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and there are coped end stacks.
The 1802 wing is a single storey, three-bay structure that projects from the north gable and features a dated skewputt.
The 1881 rear wing is a two-storey gabled structure with a dated lintel above the first floor windows. It includes a canted bay window on the ground floor (in the drawing room) and a bipartite window above. The windows in this wing have plate glass and 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case.
The building has coped end and wallhead stacks, with slate roofs.
Inside, the front portion of the house and the 1802 wing have low ceiling heights. The main front house features a simple plaster cornice, while the drawing room in the 1881 wing has a central plaster ceiling rose and a decorative cornice, along with a bracketted chimneypiece.
