Description

This is an 1829 steading, with alterations made in 1894 and 1927, originally serving as the manse steading for King Edward Old Parish Church. The building occupies a single storey and follows an L-shaped layout, enclosed by walls that create a hollow square, with the steading located on the north and east sides. An entrance is situated on the west and south sides, incorporating a section of the burial ground wall.

The steading is constructed from red sandstone rubble with red sandstone dressings, including tooled ashlar. It originally housed stables and a segmental-headed gighouse. In 1927, the architect J Willet, working with A W Reid of Elgin, converted two arched bays with flat lintels to form a garage. Other spaces within the steading feature plank doors. Modern single-pane glazing is present, along with a small ridge chimney stack and a piended slate roof.

A lean-to store is attached to the west wall. A plain, square gate pier with a shallow pyramidal cap flanks the western entrance.

A pathway for parishioners to access the burial ground and church is provided through a gateway in the south wall of the steading court – this wall also forms the northern boundary of the burial ground. This entrance was reopened to the burial ground when the steading was built in 1829. Prior to that date, a 1621 arched gateway had been the sole access point to the churchyard.
