Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 26 Seafield Street in Portsoy, was built around 1870 in the style of Matthews and Lawrie from Inverness and Aberdeen. This symmetrical two-storey bank features a chamfered angle and a return elevation to Roseacre Street. The exterior is made of coursed tooled ashlar with raised polished ashlar dressings.
At the canted angle, there is a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece that includes a double-leaf panelled door and a fanlight. The wide three-bay elevation facing Seafield Street has a slightly recessed central bay. The ground floor windows are corniced, with bipartite windows in the outer bays. There are no windows on the return gable facing Roseacre Street. The building has timber sash and case windows with four-pane glazing.
Additional architectural details include long and short masonry at the angles, a deep wallhead bandcourse, a wallhead cornice, corniced chimney stacks, and a shallow piended slate roof.
