Description

24 Albyn Place is an earlier 19th-century villa that is now part of Albyn Hospital. It is a two-storey building with a basement and attic, featuring a three-bay design. The exterior is made of finely finished, tooled coursed granite ashlar, with a rough-faced base course, projecting cills, a dividing band course, and overhanging eaves.

The north (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with a central advanced pedimented bay. It has an open pilastered porch on the ground floor, leading to a panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight. Above this is a tripartite window on the first floor. The attic features a rectangular dormer, and there are basement windows in the flanking bays on either side. The ground floor has a corniced tripartite window with consoles, and there are tripartite windows on the first floor above.

The west elevation is near-symmetrical, with an advanced plane in the centre, simple entablature, and pediment. There is a blind window to the left on the ground floor, with a window to the right and the rest of the wall is blank. The attic has a rectangular dormer.

The south elevation is also near-symmetrical, with additions at the basement level. The ground floor is advanced, featuring a central window flanked by 3-light canted windows. The first floor has a bipartite stair window in the centre, flanked by 4-light bipartite windows, and an 8-light rectangular dormer in the attic.

The east elevation is asymmetrical, with a window in the centre of the first floor, flanked by advanced planes with simple entablatures. There is a blind window to the right, a window to the left, a single window at the outer left on the ground floor, a modern fire escape to the attic, and a rectangular dormer.

The building predominantly features 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is piended with grey slate and lead ridges, and there are corniced wallhead stacks with square cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 2000.

The gatepiers and boundary walls consist of low coped walls topped with railings, with square-plan gatepiers featuring pyramidal caps at Albyn Grove, flanked by coped rubble walls. There are high coped rubble walls for the remainder, which are shared with 21, 22, and 23 Albyn Place.
