Description
26 Albyn Place in Aberdeen is a classical villa, likely designed by Archibald Simpson around 1830, with later additions and alterations. The building features a single storey, a basement, and an attic, and has a three-bay layout. It is constructed from finely finished tooled coursed granite, with panelled aprons, pilastered quoins, an eaves course, and overhanging eaves.
The north elevation is symmetrical, featuring a pedimented porch supported by Doric columns at the center of the principal floor. This porch leads to a two-leaf panelled timber door, which is accessed by stone steps and topped with a fanlight that has an oval glazing pattern. The flanking bays on either side have regular fenestration, and there is a broad rectangular dormer, which is a later addition, at the attic level.
The west elevation is also symmetrical, with a round-arched window at the center. In contrast, the south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a two-storey glazed corridor that connects the villa to a modern block at the center bay. The flanking bay to the left has regular fenestration for both the basement and principal floor, while the right side has a bowed bay with a small basement window and a three-light window above it. There is also a rectangular dormer at the attic floor on this elevation.
The east elevation is blank. The villa has a variety of timber sash and case windows and a piended grey slate roof with lead ridges. The wallhead stacks are coped and have octagonal cans, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the principal floor retains most of its original features, including doors, architraves, picture rails, cornicing, shutters, and some skirting boards. The entrance hall boasts a decoratively moulded ceiling and a timber lintel course with fretwork carving. The dividing walls between the flanking rooms have been removed, but simple marble fire surrounds remain, along with a floreate cornice in the eastern room.
The property is complemented by low coped granite boundary walls to the north, which include two square-plan gatepiers, and high coped rubble walls for the remainder of the site.
