Smokehouses, Palmerston Road

The smokehouses on Palmerston Road date from probably the early to mid 20th century and have been altered. There are three large, rectangular brick smokehouses, each featuring full-width raised ridge ventilators, located within a complex of contemporary and later fish houses.

Smoke House 1 is a red brick smokehouse or kiln with a corrugated roof that rises into a full-width flat-topped ventilator, which has mostly blocked louvres. It has brick or ashlar-coped skews with flat skewputts.

Smoke House 2 is also a red brick smokehouse or kiln, with a corrugated roof leading to a full-width gabletted ventilator that includes blocked louvres and a slate roof. The west elevation features a single-storey lean-to roof at ground level, with six openings above it. The skews are brick or ashlar-coped.

Smoke House 3 combines red brick and concrete block in its construction, featuring a corrugated roof that rises into a full-width ventilator with gabletted ends, blocked louvres, and corrugated capping. It has ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts.

The interiors were not seen in 2005.
