Description

Union Bridge, located over the River Tweed at Hutton, was designed by Captain Samuel Brown of the Royal Navy with advice from John Rennie, and constructed between 1819 and 1820. It was later improved and strengthened by J A Bean for the Tweed Bridge Trustees from 1902 to 1903. The bridge features a timber carriageway suspended from three pairs of swept, wrought iron chains made of elongated eye bar links. Wrought iron bolt brackets connect the iron rod suspenders and upper wire cables, while iron railings are threaded around the suspenders to enclose the sides.

On the western (Scottish) side, there is a channelled pink sandstone pylon with a tapering rectangular plan, which has a keystoned, round-arched opening at its center. This pylon is topped with a mutuled cornice and a tall parapet adorned with carved roses and thistles, and it features an inscription on the central block that reads 'VIS UNITA FORTIOR 1820'. The eastern (English) side has a similar channelled pink sandstone pylon set into the rock face, which includes a blocked, pilastered doorway at ground level framing a memorial plaque. This pylon also has a mutuled cornice and a tall parapet with carved roses and thistles, inscribed with 'VIS UNITA FORTIOR 1820'.

Flanking the carriageway to the west are rectangular-plan pink sandstone piers, with rubble-coped rubble walls connecting the pylon to the east. Additionally, there are pyramidal-capped, square-plan pink sandstone piers flanking the carriageway to the west of the eastern pylon, along with rubble-coped rubble walls to the east.
