Description
This is a circa 1770 bridge spanning Linn Burn, forming part of the main approach to Paxton House. The bridge is constructed primarily of coursed and droved pink sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features three large, round-arched openings with keystones. The arches have plain voussoirs, and the central keystones are adorned with carved busts. Continuous string courses run beneath low, coped, and stepped parapets, incorporating three bays of finialled iron railings between steps on each side. The ends of the bridge are splayed, with coped, square-plan piers.
The bridge is set within the Paxton House Estate, which is a Group comprised of several listed structures including boundary walls, railings, gatepiers, cottages, lodges, and Paxton House itself. Historical records, including Armstrong's map of 1771 and the Ordnance Survey map of 1857, document the bridge’s existence. It is thought to have been built between 1767 and 1776.
