Shepherd's Dene, Paxton House

Keeper's Dene at Paxton House is a building from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It consists of an asymmetrical range that was originally two separate cottages. The structure features a two-storey, two-bay block on the right, along with a single storey and attic, three-bay wing on the left, and various lean-to additions at the rear. The principal block is made of squared and snecked tooled pink sandstone rubble, while the rear is constructed of rubble. The lower wing has heavily-pointed rubble that is partly rendered and whitewashed. The building has overhanging timber bracketed eaves on the single storey range, tooled quoins, and droved long and short surrounds to stop-chamfered openings, with flush cills.

On the south elevation, the two-bay principal block has a timber panelled door to the right at ground level, with a fanlight above it. There is a lean-to rustic timber porch with tree-trunk uprights projecting to the front. To the left, there is a single window at ground level, and both bays have single windows on the first floor. The lower wing on the left has a boarded timber door centered at ground level, also with a fanlight, and a gabled rustic timber porch with tree-trunk uprights projecting to the front. There is a bipartite window to the right at ground level, a single window to the left, and pointed-arched windows in gabled dormers above.

The west side elevation features a projecting single storey, piended wing with a boarded timber door centered at ground level, a rustic porch recessed to the outer right, and a lean-to addition recessed to the outer left.

On the north rear elevation, there is a two-bay block to the left with a lean-to projection at ground level and a small single window to the outer left, with a blind window on the first floor. The lower wing on the right has a timber door offset to the right of center and flanking lean-to projections, with a door to the outer right.

The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with 4-pane attic lights and some modern windows at the rear. The principal block and rear addition have a grey slate roof with stone-coped skews, while the lower wing has a red tile piended roof with fishscale banding. There is a brick-built apex stack to the east with a sculptured dog above, a rendered apex stack to the west, and a brick-built ridge stack to the lower range, along with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999.
