Description
The site of a former two-storey terrace of 16 houses, built in the mid to later 19th century, is located on the south side of Windmill Street, west of Ballynahinch town centre. The terrace was demolished around 1974-75 and the ground is now primarily occupied by a leisure centre. The houses were originally described as having slated roofs, rendered gable ends and chimneys, and rendered walls. The first floor windows were drop-hung with mostly Georgian pane glass, although many were blocked up. Ground floor windows were also drop-hung, featuring vertical astragals and three-light windows with elliptical arch heads and horizontal astragals, with some also blocked. The doors were sheeted and flush panel, as well as panelled, with plain and three-pane fanlights, some of which were blocked. The condition of the terrace was initially described as fair to poor. When first surveyed in 1974, the front of the terrace measured approximately 220 feet.
The Ordnance Survey map of 1834 shows the south side of Windmill Street largely vacant, with only a few houses to the west. By 1858, it was completely developed with an almost continuous terrace. It is likely that some of the houses dated from circa 1840-1850, while others, particularly those with elliptical headed windows, were built later in the 19th century. Valuation records from circa 1863 describe the dwellings as "small house and garden," with most valued at £2-£3.
