Boundary markers near, 88-92 Greencastle Pier Road, Greencastle, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4LR

Two cast-iron boundary posts, dating from between 1880 and 1899, mark the former boundary of land owned by the Dundalk, Newry & Greenore Railway Company near Greencastle Pier Road in Kilkeel, County Down. These posts are associated with the pier constructed in 1880 to serve the Greenore terminus of the Holyhead ferry, a service that ceased in 1926.

Originally, eight posts existed, but only these two remain visible and are believed to be the only survivors. One post stands just west of the pier on the seaward side of the road, and the other is located on the foreshore between the pier and the adjacent house. Both posts now protrude only 20cm above the ground. They are made of cast-iron with a T-shaped cross-section, measuring 18cm across and 10cm front to back, and each face is inscribed with the words ‘D.N. & G. Ry. Co./ Boundary Post’ in 3cm high lettering. Despite being exposed to a salt-laden environment, the posts are in good condition. They exhibit industrial archaeological interest and possess group value due to their association with the pier.
