Description

This is a small, utilitarian shelter, dating to approximately 1937, situated within an attractive early 20th-century park in Warrenpoint. It is one of several public buildings within the park, alongside a bandstand and public toilets.

The shelter is a single-story, single-bay neo-classical pavilion located at the east end of the park. It features a flat concrete roof with a coped blocking course on the front and sides. The walls are painted smooth cement render with a contrasting colour applied to the basecourse. The main elevation faces southwest towards the park and is symmetrical, divided into five sections. A semicircular-headed opening centrally houses a pair of modern, painted, three-panel timber doors. Above the doors, a small pediment is applied to the blocking course. Pilasters, each with a fluted frieze and moulded base, flank the door and support a deep moulded cornice, within which is a leaded rainwater gutter. Recessed panels flank the doorway, each containing a fixed, tripartite timber window – the central pane is divided into three horizontal sections with four panes, and has four-paned sidelights. A stucco cill and decorative moulded apron panel are present. Pilasters are also located at each corner of this elevation.

The left gable is symmetrical, divided into three sections separated by pilasters, mirroring the front elevation. The central section contains a window within a recessed bay, topped by an advanced pediment applied to the blocking course. The end divisions also have recessed bays containing windows matching the facade, but the sidelights are sliding sash windows with horizontal divisions of two panes. The rear elevation is smooth, unpainted cement render. A metal ogee gutter with a downpipe is on the right side, and a plastic ventilation flue is on the left. Three plastic ventilator grilles and smaller metal ones are located just below the eaves. The right elevation is detailed similarly to the left, but all openings are blocked and rendered over.

The shelter was erected by Warrenpoint Urban District Council around 1937, at a cost of £391.14s.0d.
