Lime Kiln, Beside 271 Glassdrumman Rd, Annalong, Newry, Co Down

The remains of a lime kiln, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, stand beside 271 Glassdrumman Road, Annalong, Newry, County Down. It is of local interest, although largely rebuilt and much of its original character has been lost.

The kiln is a single-pot structure cut into an east-facing slope. Its frontage, approximately 4.3 metres wide and 4.3 metres high, is built of split Silurian rubble. Steps now lead down the front face, leading to a blocked draw hole that features a segmental arch and instepping corbelling. The kiln’s side has been partially removed, allowing internal access. The internal diameter of the pot is approximately 2.1 metres, and it is partially infilled. Much of the walling appears to have been rebuilt during refurbishment as an ornamental garden feature.

A limekiln is depicted at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map (source: 1. PRONI – OS 6/3/53/1). The remains are of industrial archaeological interest and were formerly and currently used for rural industry.
