Description

Glassdrumman House is a rambling picturesque country house of late 18th or early 19th century date, extended in the mid-19th century. The building retains much of its original character and charm, enhanced by its distinctive end-on chimney stacks and first floor window gables. It is set within mature and attractive wooded gardens to the front. The house has local historical significance through its connection with poet, dramatist and musician Elizabeth Shane, who lived here from 1927 to 1951 and is best remembered for her poem "Wee Hughie". A Blue Plaque was placed on the house in 1992 in her memory, though it is no longer visible beneath dense ivy growth. The building is currently in poor condition, with stolen roof flashing and vandalised windows.

The house is a two-storey T-planned structure aligned north-south, with a gabled two-storey wing abutting its right gable, later rear extensions, and a mature garden at front. The roofs are pitched with natural slate covering. There are three chimneys on the main block and two on the return, all cement rendered with between two and four tall pots set at a skew rising from each stack.

The east (front) elevation features three gables above the first floor windows, all rising to the level of the main ridge line, with a skylight in the roof between the left and middle gables. The walls are granite cement wet dashed, now heavily overgrown with ivy. A wooden trellis is attached to the front elevation of the end wing. The east elevation has an offset single-storey gabled porch beneath the central gable, with a 9-panel door to its right side. To the left is a tripartite sliding sash window; to the right is a French window with 10-paned glazed panels. Each of the first-floor gables contains a single sliding sash window. The east elevation of the wing has 4/4 sliding sash windows at ground and first floor levels.

The south elevation of the main block is plain except for a sliding sash window at ground floor level. The west (rear) elevation faces a courtyard enclosed by modern single-storey outbuildings now in a derelict state. Modern windows have been inserted at wall head level and project above the eaves. A flat-roofed square water tower stands central to the main block, and a one-storey lean-to is positioned at the junction of the main block and wing. Both these extensions have wet dashed rendered walls similar to the main building and glazed sliding sash windows. An 8/8 sliding sash window is positioned on the right of the west elevation of the wing. The north elevation of the wing is plain with a single doorway to the ground floor.

The landscaped gardens and winding driveway remain intact but overgrown. The boundary wall to Glassdrumman Road is constructed of dashed and painted concrete blocks. The Heritage Gardens Inventory records the garden as containing "ornamental planting around stream and lawns".

Mapping evidence shows a building on this site by 1834, enlarged by the time of the 1859 Ordnance Survey map.
